That’s the gist of what Senator John McCain of Arizona said on NBC’s “Meet the Press” Sunday. McCain predicts that Congress will never pass an immigration reform bill until a very secure border with Mexico has been established…not just promised. The Arizona Republican told NBC’s “Meet the Press,” the fact that Phoenix has the second-highest number of kidnappings in the world and threats against police in Nogales, Arizona from Mexican drug cartels, are proof a lot more needs to be done.
McCain commended Governor Jan Brewer for standing up for Arizona, although he says that he doesn’t agree with her recent statement that most illegal immigrants are being used to smuggle drugs into the U.S. McCain said, “I think the governor of Arizona has done a good job in this whole debate. I may not agree with that one sentence that she uses, but she’s standing up for Arizona. And, I think that the people of my state deserve a better environment of security than the one they’re getting now from the federal government.”
Being a border patrol agent has to be one of the toughest jobs in the country. The border patrol confirms that it has received death threats. One agent claims that they’ve had bounties ranging from 25,000 to 250,000 dollars placed on their heads.
What gives anyone in Mexico the right to believe that they should be able to sneak into the United States. Poverty is often cited as a reason for illegals crossing the border. But is that a U.S. problem? Or is it the Mexican government’s problem? And, it’s all overshadowed by the rampant drug smuggling into the U.S., spurred by the high demand for illegal drugs in this country. Could it be as Pogo once said, “We have met the enemy and he is us.”
