The clean house attitude is indeed very strong at this point. A new Rasmussen Reports National Telephone Survey finds 65% say it would be better if most incumbents were defeated this fall. Not surprisingly, 82% of republicans – and 77% of voters not affiliated with either party – say it would be better for the country if most congressional incumbents were defeated.
Perhaps more surprisingly, despite their party’s control of Congress, democrats are evenly divided on the question. Voters continue to strongly support repeal of the national health care bill. Even as Congress puts the finishing touches on legislation asserting more government control over the U.S. financial industry, most voters continue to believe that legislators have little idea what they’re doing when it comes to the economy. 41%, as a matter of fact, say a group of people selected at random from the phone book would do a better job addressing the nation’s problems than the current Congress.
It sounds like incumbent members of Congress are in big trouble, right? The Congress has always gotten low approval ratings from voters. But the same politicians keep showing up for work after the elections, by and large. Why is that? Many Americans are angry only at legislators from other areas, while approving of their own senator and representative. And it’s one thing to say throw the bums out months before the election, but something else when you actually step into that voting booth? We shall see what we shall see.
