Will new sanctions against Iran work or are they a mistake?

President Obama applauds the new United Nations sanctions on Iran over its nuclear programs. He predicts they will hurt Iran. He said they are the toughest sanctions ever imposed on Iran and will send an unmistakable message to Tehran to end its nuclear ambitions.

The U.N. action represents the 4th round of international sanctions over Iran’s refusal to halt Uranium enrichment efforts. President Obama insists that the U.N. recognizes Iran’s rights but said with those rights come responsibilities. 12 countries represented in the U.N. Security Council voted for the sanctions. Lebanon abstained while Turkey and Brazil voted against them. The Brazilian leader thinks the sanctions will just make Iran harder to deal with. In televised comments Brazil’s president said Iran wanted to negotiate about its nuclear activities but other Security Council powers including the U.S. did not because they think force resolves everything.

Western powers suspect Iran’s nuclear program is aimed at developing atomic bombs. Let’s face it, do you really think the sanctions will work? Experts who study the impact of sanctions in the past say the chances these new sanctions will get Iran to abandon its “lust for the bomb” are virtually zero. President Obama said Iran must understand that true security will not come through the development of nuclear weapons. But does Iran really want security? Or does it desire more than anything else to wipe Israel off the face of the earth. Iran’s president has plainly admitted he does. So, are a few additional sanctions likely to change his mind?
