If you are a member of the U.S. Congress you have a political target painted on your re-election bid.

A Washington Post/ABC News Poll finds voters’ support for members of Congress is at an all-time low. There are just 12 primary elections today upon which to test that theory. The rest will come in November. This poll claims that a meager 29% say they would vote for their current congressional representative in the fall elections.

That percentage is even lower than in 1994, when democrats were soundly swept from power after having a 40-year majority.  But the poll shows “Tea Party” candidates and republicans should be concerned, too.  More than half of the 1004 adults surveyed expressed an unfavorable impression of the “Tea Party”.  Six out of ten feel negative toward republican policies, while just a third trust GOP lawmakers over democrats to deal with the nation’s pressing problems.

The poll was conducted over the phone with respondents from last Thursday through Sunday. Many incumbents are facing difficulties as they face recession-weary voters fed up with the economic record of both parties in Washington in recent years. “Fundamentally, it’s the economy,” said University of Virginia political science professor Larry Sabato. “That’s at the heart of most of the unrest.” Or, as republican strategist Tucker Eskew put it, “if you look like a politician and you talk like a politician and you wear experience as your armor, you are vulnerable in 2010.”
