A Quinnipiac University Poll released yesterday found voters approve by a 51 to 31 percent margin the tough immigration law recently passed by Arizona. The support for the Arizona law comes despite the 45 – 40 percent belief by voters that it will lead to discrimination. It isn’t just a border state that is fighting illegal immigration. Massachusetts is a long way from the southern border. With one lawmaker there citing President Lincoln’s respect for the rule of law, the state senate of Massachusetts just passed a far-reaching crackdown on illegal immigrants and those who would hire them.
We don’t reward criminals who break the law in America. We punish them. That’s well established American thinking. But when it comes to illegal aliens many politicians are willing to forgo the illegality of people sneaking into the country. The reason is clear. They think if they can grant legal status to all the illegals already in the USA they will surely gain their votes. That of course spells election wins and more political power. But political reasons are not sound thinking nor moral thinking when it comes to what’s best for the country.
And how fair is it to the many who are applying legally for citizenship? If we want to allow illegals already here to stay it should be done in a non-political way. But to keep illegals here and in many cases allow them to be be resigned to living in substandard living conditions and on pauper’s wage isn’t right and isn’t befitting a nation with the legacy of freedom and fairness of America.
