A Christian biochemist claims the recent creation of the first-ever “synthetic cell” makes a case for intelligent design.

The Christian Post says Dr. Fazle Rana with the science-faith think tank “Reasons to Believe” would like to see even more effort toward this research, that’s because it shows certain aspects of nature are so complex that they could not have come about by evolution.  Rana said in a “Reasons to Believe” podcast that he believes the research is a “brand new class of arguments” for intelligent design.

Given the effort that went into the synthesis of this gene it’s hard to envision how unintelligent, undirected processes could have generated life from a so called “prebiotic soup,” said Dr. Rana. He went on to say that though it wasn’t the intention of the biochemists who created the cell, they unwittingly provided evidence that life’s components, and consequently life itself, must stem from the work of an intelligent designer.

Rana said that even if the father of the theory of evolution, Charles Darwin, knew what we know today would he have proposed a theory of accidental biological evolution? Of course, Rana admits, it’s impossible to say, but knowing what Darwin didn’t has been enough to cause a large number of scientists around the world, representing a range of scientific disciplines to question the theory of evolution.

I can interject from personal experience that we humans are anxious in our natural state to explain away God. But deep inside we know he exists even while we continue to rebel against him. In our natural state of sinfulness, we like to think we’re smarter than God. Of course it’s a ridiculous argument, but it is one we can be forgiven for through Jesus Christ.
