Can you imagine the headlines around the world if we Christians all lived like Jesus. The Bible is full of examples of Jesus’ thinking. Here was God in the form of man… his own creation. So what better example can we have than to think like him as much as possible humanly, to be as pleasing and useful to God as possible. The very first thing that shines above all others, I think, is that Jesus was a servant. Of course we know he died on the cross which was a mind boggling expression of service to all men, women and children.
We can’t begin to understand what that entailed and what a loving act it was. We can only get a little hint in this life of that great act of sacrifice in the plan of salvation. He went out of his way, remember, to meet the woman at the well, she was in a class below him, but he went to her, he taught her the way of salvation. He healed many people. But I think one of the most stirring examples of his servanthood was when he washed his own disciples feet at the last supper. Here was the God/man, who didn’t see it as below his dignity to wash those dirty feet.
Let’s look at the other practical examples of Christ… ones that we can start to adapt to our own lives a little bit. Jesus was also truthful. Modern day people who say they are followers of Jesus are woefully out of touch in this area. A Barna poll found recently found among those who say they rely on Biblical standards and principles today as their compass for moral decision making, only half believe that all moral truth is absolute. We have many comforts today too. And we’re considered out of step if we don’t have big retirement account when we retire. But to think like Jesus today we may have to give up some comforts of this life in order to be more like Jesus. Finally, do we love somewhat like Jesus loved?
