A noted astronomer startles Americans with his prediction that aliens will visit earth.

Astrophysicist Stephen Hawking commented on his new Discovery Channel TV series, “If aliens visit us, the outcome would be much as when Columbus landed in America, which didn’t turn out well for the native Americans.”  The program depicts an imagined universe featuring alien spaceships on the hunt for resources after draining their own planet dry. Hawking says, “Such advanced aliens would perhaps become nomads, looking to conquer and colonize whatever planets they can reach.”

The doomsday scenario is probable according to Hawking. On the probability of alien life existing, he says, “to my mathematical brain, the numbers alone make thinking about aliens perfectly rational. The real challenge is to work out what aliens might actually be like.” Glowing squid-like creatures or bright yellow predators that kill their prey with stinging tails are among the creatures that stalk Hawking’s fantastical cosmos.

Note, however, that scientist Hawking ignores some basic principles of science. Namely, that life cannot exist anywhere else in the universe and the impossibility of traveling to even the nearest star to earth. Astronomer Hugh Ross notes that the longhand notation of the probability of life in another part of the universe is so small that the numbers of zeroes after the decimal point would fill over 20,000 complete Bibles. In other words, Ross says, the probability is as close to zero as any scientifically determined probability has ever been. More detail about this tomorrow.
