Following example of the greatest man who ever lived landed Craig Taffaro, president of the St. Bernard parish in Louisiana in big trouble. Jesus demonstrated humility for his disciples by washing their feet just hours before he went to the cross. He reminded the men who would start the Christian church and spread the Gospel around the ancient world that they must be servants.
Well,Taffaro decided to follow Christ’s example at work and offered to wash the feet of any willing parish employees. He said, “As the chief executive officer of St. Bernard parish government, I thought it was an appropriate gesture to show that I am as humbled as any other sinner in the world, so much so that I would offer to wash the feet of the employees.”
He didn’t publicize his actions. A reporter was alerted to the matter by several phone calls from people who had heard from government employees whose feet were washed. Then the American Civil Liberties Union got involved. A letter from the executive director of the ACLU told Taffaro that the Constitution prohibits government officials from imposing religious practices on employees at the workplace.
This public official had an attitude that all Christians and especially Christian leaders should have. To be willing to wash the feet of others regardless of whether they are big shots or little shots. God sees no difference and Jesus example drove that concept home about as clearly as possible. Christians, especially leaders, must be servants, not tyrants.
