Some Americans are disenchanted with politics? So what’s new about that? Congress is almost always disliked by the people in these modern times. The President usually is a little more popular than Congress. But, the problem is that even though there is a lot of genuine distrust and dislike of Congress, most voters keep reelecting their own Senators or Congress members. If that continues Congress will never change.
We have to take a tougher look at our own senators and members of the House, and in some cases, we need to vote against them. That’s the only way Congress will really change. The members need know there’s a real chance they won’t be reelected. I’m not encouraging you to automatically vote against your representatives in Congress, I’m just saying, take a look at their record; and, if you don’t like that record, realize you don’t have to vote for them.
There is one more problem with we the people. Not very many of us take advantage of our freedom, our privilege to vote. Turnout is very low, and I understand why. This is a busy society. It’s hard to research and know who to vote for. So a huge percentage of us just don’t bother to vote at all. But with all the resources available to us now, it’s easier than ever to find out who voted for or against laws that are of importance to you.
The right to vote is what those worn out, freezing men who followed General Washington from the Valley Forge encampment, to cross an icy Delaware river and launch a surprise attack on German mercenaries fought for. That resulted in victory and led to a change and the eventual victory for independence. And that victory included our right to vote.
