If you’re like most people, it could’ve been your parents, your spouse, a friend, someone you work with, or any of a thousand different answers. In the midst of thinking about influences in our lives, we must not forget that we all have an influence on others. All us are people of influence. How we live, the choices we make, and the things we say, all touch others’ lives.
Jesus said that we are the salt of the earth. In other words, we flavor life for not only ourselves, but for others. Jesus went on to say that we are the light of the world; and, that a city set on a hill can’t be hidden. He admonishes us to let our lights shine before other people, so that they can see our good deeds which will bring praise to God. This is important for every Christian.
But it is especially important for you and for me as we gain more and more influence or more and more responsibility. For instance, a pastor, or someone who runs a successful Christian ministry, must be especially careful as they gain more control over that church or ministry. Human nature is inclined to slip into reveling in power. It could easily become our own little kingdom.
God help us to be servants, to give in to the Holy Spirit - not our own thirst for power or control. We must resist that urge, and promise God, that with his help and correction, we are determined to be a good influence for his name’s sake.
